John Duke is a classically trained artist and self-taught abstract painter living in Melbourne.

Working with acrylic in the expressionist style, John is inspired by history, culture and world events. These themes have been richly infused into his current collections. Pairing down objects to their simplest form, John reworks them into an emotive tapestry. His pieces search for spontaneity through the texturally rich exploration of colour and space. Use of bolder hues such as yellows and turquoise bring a deliberate sense of positivity and energy to his work. Johns art process also aims to create a sense of harmony and equilibrium within his own life.

“ Instead of me working really long hours in my full time job, I thought no, i’m going to start painting and use it for my own mental health”

This sentiment is expressed in the subtle but rich tensions between balance,  light and dark, masculine and feminine, geometric and organic. To see more of Johns work, visit his Mentone studio or Victor Alexandre boutiques in Olinda and Brighton.
